Time To Stamp Out The Munich Chants!

In less than a fortnight after their FA Cup Semi Final triump, Manchester City fans, although admittedly a minority, managed to taint their reputation by singing a song in which they describe Manchester United fans as ‘Munichs’. Some Manchester City fans consider it acceptable to describe United fans as ‘Munichs’ in the same way as United refer to City fans as ‘Bitters’.

At the recent Blackburn v Manchester City games, it was clear what many City fans were singing. This time directly referring to the Munich air disaster and jokingly along about how 'Yaya Toure put the ball in the Munich net'.

The fact that football fans are singing with reference to a disaster in which 8 Manchester United players died and not to mention Frank Swift, an ex-Manchester City footballer himself, is sickening.

However, we United fans are far from perfect ourselves. In a recent Youth Cup game at Anfield, a small section of Manchester United fans felt it necessary to despicably sing about the tragedy of Hillsborough, resulting in the arrest of six United fans. This was equally unacceptable and though many will dismiss this chanting as naivety, this is not an attitude and perspective that we should go along with.

When will the FA learn? When will they cut this out? If sectarian singing is so heavily punished then what about this? People have lost their lives through no fault of their own but certain others find it acceptable to taunt these deaths.

Let's stamp it out!

Rangers fans have been banned from European games due to singing about the Potato Famine in Ireland when playing against Celtic. I think this action needs to take place to stop the sick chants!
