Sir Alex hails next generation

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his youngsters as they cruised to victory against Hull on Sunday. His team-sheet was barely recognisable but United's next generation were in control at the KC Stadium and Darron Gibson's wonder goal won it for the reigning champions. The result meant Hull needed Newcastle to lose in order to survive and the Toon did not disappoint as they went down 1-0 at Aston Villa.

Ferguson chose to rest all of his first team as they prepared for the Champions League final and the team he would put out dominated the lead-up to the clash at the KC Stadium.

But his decision to field an under strength team was vindicated and Ferguson was delighted with how the youngsters coped.

He said: "There was a lot of speculation about what team I'd pick, but I was always confident the one I played would do well. We really do have a great bunch of young players and what they need is opportunities like what they had.

"Some of them have played in the League Cup and FA Cup this season which has been good for them and they showed the extra maturity they've gained in terms of being able to handle the type of game it was against Hull." Gibson was particularly impressive and Ferguson singled the central midfielder out for special praise.

"It was a marvellous strike from Darron - it's something he's good at and one of his big qualities," added Sir Alex. "He's got terrific feet and great power and scored a great goal."
