Sky will spend a lot of money trailing the forthcoming Ryder Cup. It will spend a lot of money broadcasting the Ryder Cup. Then just as Rory McIlroy is standing over a tricky four-foot putt to beat Phil Mickelson on the final afternoon, the satellite broadcaster will begin its coverage of the Premier League match between Chelsea and Arsenal.

It appears to be an extraordinary piece of scheduling to stick on the London derby at 4pm on the Sunday of one of sport's biggest events.

We live in a multi-platform digital age, but Sky's decision ignores all those sports fans who do not have a dish but watch the big events at their local pubs. It will be up to the local publican to sort out whether to put on the footie or the golf and he may well have a riot on his hands.

The European Tour is not overly happy about the situation, but its public response is a diplomatic one. Richard Hills, the Tour's Ryder Cup director and a big Chelsea fan, said: "We've spoken with Sky. We're comfortable with their decision. It's a multi-platform process and there is something for everybody."

Sandy Jones, the head of the PGA, said: "I could be cynical and say maybe Chelsea and Arsenal are more concerned, but I don't think our audience will be affected. Sky do a good job for all of us."

The bizarre monikers emerged in a list published yesterday of the most unusual names of the decade.

Rooney, Bowie and Cobain have been given to a few children whose parents were influenced by celebrity footballers and musicians.

There are also a handful of hippy-style names such as Stone, Gift, Heaven and Echo, while the fashion world might have inspired the names Denim, Diesel and Armani.

Faye Mingo, spokeswoman for parenting club Bounty.com – which compiled the list – said: “It illustrates the growing trend for wackier, celebrity-style names not previously heard of.”

The stage is set for the most anticipated match of all of the summer soccer series. The MLS All-Stars take on English Premier League side Manchester United.

Manchester United are in the middle of their North American tour and will be looking to get back on the winning side of things after losing 2-1 to the Kansas City Wizards this past Sunday.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been using a lot of young players on this tour and I don't expect that to change for this All-Star game.

Veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will feature surely as will Portuguese winger Nani. There is talk that Javier Hernandez may also feature in this match which will be a treat for the Mexican supporters in attendance.

United's goals for this match will be to get a win, improve overall fitness, and not pick up any injuries.

The MLS All-Stars will be coached by former USMNT coach Bruce Arena. On the field, the all-stars will be led by LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan.

Manchester United have been forced to place 4,000 Old Trafford season tickets on general sale.

Earlier this week United said 50,000 season tickets had been sold, a milestone seen as a victory for the Glazer family against protesting fans.

The "Green and Gold" protest movement - unhappy at the club's debt level under its American owners - became a visible presence at Old Trafford last season.

Fans' groups say United has suffered a marked fall in year-on-year sales.

Manchester United sold 64,000 season tickets two years ago, of which 8,000 were all-important premium tickets, and only 500 fewer last season.

One close watcher of United's finances, who wished to remain anonymous, said sales were thought to be "5,000-10,000 down on last year".

He said this was down to discontent with the Glazer regime and the wider economic situation.

It is unclear whether there is a link between the fan discontent and the issue of season ticket sales. Numerous attempts have been made to reach Manchester United for an official comment this summer but none have been successful.

It is also unclear how many of the club's 8,500 premium seats - 7,000 executive seats and 1,500 hospitality packages - have been sold.

Over 40% of Manchester United's match-day revenue comes from these premium seats, despite them making up only 11% of Old Trafford's 76,000 capacity.

The need to place season tickets on general sale - seven weeks after the deadline for renewals had passed - also raises questions about the club's much-trumpeted waiting list, an untapped reservoir of support supposed to number 60,000 fans.

This is an issue that is likely to come up with investors in August when the next set of quarterly accounts are due.

The three-monthly reporting of the club's financial results was a condition of this year's controversial £504m bond issue and chief executive David Gill could experience an uncomfortable bondholders' conference call.

But nobody can accuse the Premier League giants of not trying hard enough to shift their tickets.

Anecdotal evidence suggests there has been an unprecedented sales drive this summer, with particularly attractive deals offered to wavering executive-seat customers.

The backdrop to this story is one of booming ticket sales at Manchester City - albeit from a much lower base - and solid sales performances from rivals such as Arsenal.

The midfielder was sidelined between September 2008 and April 2010 and required surgery on both knees but did return to action at the end of last season. He played 45 minutes for the Reserves before making a brief appearance off the bench in the first-team's final away fixture at Sunderland.

There’s plenty of positive news for United fans, though, with the boss confirming three key men should recover from injury in time to line up for the start of the season.

“Antonio Valencia should be okay and Nani should be ready for the start of the season, too. Michael Owen is doing great – he’s doing all his work in the gymnasium every day. I don’t think he’ll be fit to go to America but he should be ready for the start of the season.”

The boss also revealed Rio Ferdinand faces a battle to be fit for the Reds’ first league test, at home to Newcastle United on Monday 16 August, although admitted it will be a race that’s run close.

“It depends on how his progress is over the next few weeks,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Anderson remains on track to return from a cruciate knee injury in late September.

“He’s doing fine, he’s working hard, but it will be late September.”

There’s plenty of positive news for United fans, though, with the boss confirming three key men should recover from injury in time to line up for the start of the season.

“Antonio Valencia should be okay and Nani should be ready for the start of the season, too. Michael Owen is doing great – he’s doing all his work in the gymnasium every day. I don’t think he’ll be fit to go to America but he should be ready for the start of the season.”

The boss also revealed Rio Ferdinand faces a battle to be fit for the Reds’ first league test, at home to Newcastle United on Monday 16 August, although admitted it will be a race that’s run close.

“It depends on how his progress is over the next few weeks,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brazilian midfielder Anderson remains on track to return from a cruciate knee injury in late September.

“He’s doing fine, he’s working hard, but it will be late September.”

Owen Hargreaves has today been ruled out of United's pre-season tour.

Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV: "The bad news is that Owen Hargreaves is back in America seeing the specialist. He won't be ready for the start of the season. I don't know when he'll be back."

Manchester City are set to sign Spain's star winger David Silva from Valencia for an undisclosed fee reported to be around £25 million.

City have agreed a 5 year deal with the 24 year old, who will complete a medical and sign for the club once his involvement in South Africa finishes.

Silva, speaking from the Spanish training camp, said: "Firstly I would like to thank Valencia as a club and all of their loyal fans, and my team-mates there and staff. I have enjoyed six years at Valencia, they discovered me as a footballer and they will always be a special club for me.
